Begonia ‘Pink Panther’
An eye catching and highly decorative foliage begonia, Begonia ‘Pink Panther’ is loved for its dramatic pink speckled leaves and rich tropical appearance. The olive green foliage is scattered with vivid pink spotting and often edged with rosy tones, creating a bold contrast that makes this begonia stand out instantly amongst other houseplants. Compact, colourful, and full of character, it is a fantastic choice for terrariums, indoor plant cabinets, or bright shelves in need of a splash of colour.
This striking begonia thrives in warm, humid conditions and develops increasingly vibrant foliage when grown in stable indoor environments with bright filtered light.
Scientific Name
Begonia ‘Pink Panther’ (cultivar begonia)
Common Name
Pink Panther Begonia
Origin
A cultivated foliage begonia selected for its heavily spotted pink foliage and compact tropical growth habit.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, especially during the middle of the day, as this can scorch the leaves and fade the pink colouring.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity, ideally above 60%. Excellent for terrariums, indoor cabinets, bathrooms, or rooms with a humidifier. Avoid dry air and cold draughts.
Soil
Use a loose, airy, free draining mix rich in organic matter. A blend containing coco coir, fine bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite works especially well.
Food
Feed every 2 to 4 waters during spring and summer using a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Higher humidity helps maintain the vivid pink spotting and keeps new foliage looking healthy and lush. Crisp leaf edges are usually a sign the air is too dry.
Extras
Young leaves often emerge with especially intense pink colouring before gradually deepening in tone as they mature.
Did You Know?
Many colourful begonias evolved their bold spotting and metallic tones to help maximise light absorption in the dim conditions of tropical rainforest floors.
